Relief Materials Provided To Landslide-hit Families In Darchula

Heavy rain that fell throughout the night of 30th June 2016 caused flash floods and landslides in various parts of Darchula District. Damages to houses, schools, water supply system, roads and loss of life and property were reported from all parts of the district. Landslides mainly affected eight VDCs viz. Bhagwati, Malikaarjun Dhap, Sarmauli, Dandakot, Ritha Chaupata, Dattu, Kharkada completely damaging 14 houses, 2 schools and a water supply system (Distict Disaster Relief Committee, Darchula). The landslide also blocked the main road. As a result, long and short distance transportation was completely stopped for four days. Three individuals were killed (Sarmauli-1, Dhap-1 and Malikaarjun-1 respectively) and one person has been still missing in Dhap VDC.

Five houses in Malikaarjun VDC, two houses in Bhagwati VDC, one building of Saraswati Secondary School, Bhagawati VDC, one building of Bhagawati Primary School, Shankarpur VDC and water supply of Malikarjun VDC have been completely destroyed. In addition, teaching-learning materials, ECD kits, etc. supported by Good Neighbors International Nepal to Saraswati Secondary School, Bhagawati VDC was also swept away by the flood along with the school building. Now, the school is running classes under the sky.

GNI Nepal sponsored children and their families were reported safe except five. DDRC meeting was held on 2 July 2016. DDRC proposed to GNI Nepal for providing relief materials (food items) in Bhagwati and Malikarjun VDC clusters. A relief package (50 kg of rice, 1 box of noodles, 5 kg of pulses, 2.5 liters of oil, and 2 kg of beaten rice) was provided to each five sponsored and two non-sponsored children’s families affected by the monsoon landslides and flash floods in Malikarjun and Bhagwati VDC in coordination with the DDRC Darchula on 5th July 2016.
