Child marriage is widespread in Bajura District of Sudhurpaschim Province, severely limiting children's growth and development while exposing them to various forms of violence and deprivation. To combat this issue, GNI Nepal has implemented several interventions in collaboration with local governments, child protection actors, and other relevant stakeholders. These efforts have led to the declaration of Ward Nos. 4, 5, and 9 of Budhiganga Municipality as child-marriage-free zones in July, November and December of 2023, respectively.
The declarations were announced at formal events attended by stakeholders, including local government representatives, women's groups, representatives of INGOs/NGOs, media persons, schoolteachers, children, and community members. The events featured a Deuda competition and speech contest for local women, as well as a street drama against child marriage performed by child club members.
