Achieving Self-Reliance through the Collection Center

Shree Sarangeedada Women Agriculture and Saving Cooperative Limited, located in Ward No.7, Godawari Municipality, Lalitpur District was established in 2013 with 25 members. Initially, the cooperative aimed to empower and make women in the community self-reliant through income-generating activities. However, during its first five years, it struggled to sustain and manage day-to-day operations. It also lacked the essential mechanisms and policies for effective management, resulting in problems like limited loan mobilization, disorganized accounting, financial constraints, minimal shareholder engagement, and lack of community ownership and trust.

Presently, the cooperative has grown to include 401 members, 91 of them are from sponsored children's families. Its total capital stands at NRP 15.7 million. In the fiscal year 2022/23, it extended loans to 120 members. The cooperative is well-managed, with two regular staff members.

The cooperative's association with GNI Nepal, which began in 2017, catalyzed this transformation. Through GNI Nepal, the cooperative members received training in cooperative management, financial management, leadership, and insurance. Additionally, GNI Nepal provided equipment support, including computers, printer sets, accounting software, lockers, and furniture for office management.

Moreover, GNI Nepal played a crucial role in transforming agricultural practices in the community. Despite vegetable farming being the primary occupation for the local inhabitants, it was on the verge of decline due to the excessive use of chemical pesticides and deteriorating soil quality. Amid such opposing scenarios, GNI Nepal introduced natural farming practices, emphasizing minimal tillage and replacing chemical pesticides with natural extracts based on local resources. This approach reduced health hazards, enhanced soil quality, and combated climate change. As a result, not only did the existing farmers continue their occupation, but many new farmers also pursued vegetable farming. Cooperative members also received cattle-rearing training.

With GNI Nepal's support, the cooperative started a vegetable collection center in May 2019, collecting seasonal and green leafy vegetables and local fruits, particularly plums, peaches, and pears. GNI Nepal provided the cooperative with items like weighing machines, plastic crates, and drums to ease the operation. The collection center has benefited 87 farmers, with annual transactions of NRP 13 million. The cooperative has contracted a collector to gather vegetables and sell them to retailers in core market centers.

Farmers associated with the cooperative are also engaged in milk production. GNI Nepal equipped them with cattle rearing and shed management skills and provided credit linkage support. So, they now sell 24,000 liters of milk worth 2.1 million rupees every month.

GNI Nepal partners with Shree Sarangeedada Women Agriculture Cooperative Limited to conduct activities such as entrepreneurship development training, seasonal/off-seasonal vegetable training, farmers' field schools, climate-smart agriculture training, natural farming training, and seeds and modern agricultural equipment.  GNI Nepal also helped establish connections to secure resources, including funds from local government and development projects. The cooperative successfully coordinated with the local government's agriculture and livestock section to receive training and access agricultural equipment. Additionally, the cooperative's building, serving as both the office and collection center, was constructed with local government support.

Parbati Gautam, an executive member of the cooperative, shares, “Only after being associated with GNI Nepal, the cooperative succeed in increasing its members, capital, and capabilities”. She adds, “GNI Nepal’s support to the community in vegetable farming made it possible to operate its collection center.  With the operation of the collection center, we have started to become self-reliant.”
